Today in Kindergarten...

  • AM & PM Kinders did a Halloween parade around the school showing off their costumes
  • AM & PM Kinders recorded different pictures of things that start with 'B' in our sketchbooks
  • AM & PM Kinders did some dancing to a couple different halloween tunes

Wednesday, October 30th

Today in Kindergarten...

  • We showed what we've learned about sorting. We sorted various items in the classroom into two groups
  • We did some spooky Halloween art and learned a new painting technique called a "wash".
  • AM Kinders read "Room on the Broom" by Julia Donaldson

  • What things did you sort with today? How did you sort them?
  • How do you do a wash (with paint)?

Tomorrow students are welcome to come to school in their costumes. We ask that any props such as masks, wands, shields, etc. be left at home.

Today in Kindergarten...

  • AM & PM Kinders looked at the below picture and shared what they could SEE, what they already KNEW about objects/places/things in the picture (fact wise), and what they WONDERED about (things they did not know the answer to yet).
  • AM Kinders had GYM with Mrs. Miller today. 
  • PM Kinders had FAB and their snack outside
  • PM Kinders practiced a fire drill with the entire school. We talked about how a fire drill is a practice in case a real fire happened, that teachers are here to keep students safe, and that it is a SERIOUS & SILENT drill. The Kinders did excellent!
Ask your child about...
  • What did they SEE, what do they already KNOW, and what was one thing they are WONDERING about in the picture below. 
  • AM Kinders....ask what they practiced today in gym. 
  • PM Kinders...ask why we do fire drills at school. Tell them to describe what they did during our fire drill today. 


***A reminder for both FAB (fresh air breaks) and possible fire drills...please help your littles dress for the weather. We had a couple kiddos that did not bring toques or mitts today and some that did not bring snowpants. Future fire drills will be a surprise and children will be expected to go outside in what they are currently wearing (no coats). Today was our first one and so we had the opportunity to get only our coats on.

Today in Kindergarten...

  • We learned about a new letter!
  • We talked about and practiced mindfulness for our first Mindful Monday
  • We played at all new centers
  • We practiced close observing of an interesting picture!

It's HALLOWEEN this Thursday!! We know many of your littles are very excited to wear their Halloween costumes to school this Thursday! Students are welcome to wear their costumes for the day. We ask that students come to school in their costumes, and that any props (masks, wands, shields, etc.) are left at home.

As always, we ask that students come to school with a healthy snack. Please save Halloween treats for home .

Today in PM Kindergarten...

  • We went on a field trip to the GLENBOW MUSEUM
  1. We looked at different face emotions on cards and as a group looked for a painting that matched that emotion. We had to explain our reasons to the group. 
  2. We did small group collages for different feelings
  3. We talked about how you can feel and see different things in paintings when you look at them. It might not be what your friend, family or teacher experiences! We also imagined we were IN the paintings and described what we things we could hear and smell.

Tomorrow is our PM Kinder FIELD TRIP to the GLENBOW MUSEUM. (normal school drop off and pickup hours)

Today in Kindergarten...

  • AM Kinders were read the book 'What Pet Should I Get' by Dr. Seuss. They made predictions in their sketchbooks on what would happen at the end of the book. 
  • PM Kinders did a guided 'pumpkin' draw today for the letter P. We talked bout warm colors, shading, and lines. 
  • AM Kinders learned about STARS today (what they are, how they are born, what colors they can be, and what happens when they die. We also learned what 'constellations' are!)
  • AM Kinders went outside for FAB and snack. 
  • PM Kinders had gym with Mrs. Miller.

Today in Kindergarten...

  • We reviewed the letters we've been working on - F,E,D and P.
  • We did our own Van Gogh inspired art
  • We practiced writing our names with an uppercase letter to start and lowercase letters to follow

  • What are the actions for letters F, E, D, and P?
  • To name all the letters in their name or write their name with upper and lowercase letters

Today in AM Kindergarten...

  • We did letter P art and drew some beautiful Pumpkins! 
  • We practiced writing our names 
  • We went to Phys. Ed. and practiced catching and throwing with balls and scoops

In PM Kindergarten...
  • We read a story and talked about our favorite part! 
  • We learned about stars! 
  • We finished the day with some space yoga :)

  • After reading your bedtime story - talk about your favorite parts of the story!

Today in Kindergarten...

  • AM & PM Kinders practiced drawing a person with all of their parts (using shapes) and adding details (e.g., hair, clothes). 
  • AM & PM Kinders learned how to print the letter 'P' 
  • AM & PM Kinders collaborated during centers and tried to independently choose a new friend to eat their snack with!

Friday October 17th, 2019

Today in AM Friday Kindergarten...

  • We had buddies today with out Grade 3 buddies. Our buddy read us a book on the laptop (via Pebble Go) and then we told our buddy something that we learned. We then drew a picture of it. 
  • Instead of going outside we had a bit of a teachable moment today. History was made this morning when the first ALL female astronaut space walk took place at the international space station. This was streaming live so we got to observe and ask questions! 
    * Asteroids fly around in space – SAM
    * I learned about the first time when the astronauts went into space – CHASE
    * Stars can be three different colour: blue, yellow, red. – HUNTER
    * Stars can explode. - JORDAN

  • We did some space yoga
  • We played at centers
  • We went to the gym and practice catching, throwing and skipping.
  • We did some music today where we learned about 'beat' and and practicing recognizing beats in our own names. 

Ask your child...
  • How many beats are in your name? (get them to pat their knees to show you)
  • What did they get to watch that was happening in SPACE today?
  • What did you do with your buddy today?

Tomorrow is an AM Kinder Friday!

Today in Kindergarten...

  • AM & PM Kinders learned about Vincent Van Gogh. We studied some of his artwork and talked how art can make us feel different things when we look at. We also talked about how we can use our senses when we look at it. Kinders imagined they were in the paintings and talked about what they could 'smell' and 'hear'. 
  • PM Kinders went to gym today with Mrs. Miller. They worked on catching a bean bag and underhand throws with a partner. They also showed their skipping abilities. 
  • AM Kinders went outside for FAB and snack today. 
  • AM & PM Kinders did centers today. They were introduced to a new sensory center today. 
  • AM and PM Kinders did some mindfulness learning (discovering how they feel when they are all tense, when they relax their muscles, when they take deep slow breaths). We also did some YOGA :)

  • What artist did they learn about today?
  • What is a feeling? Can they name different feelings.

Today in Kindergarten we...

  • Created some art for our D pages. We used white crayon and black paint to create a Dark sky!
  • Practiced showing what we know in Math to answer the question "what doesn't belong?". We learned math questions sometimes have many different answers!

Parents who responded to our email asking for those interested in volunteering and have their pink and purple volunteer forms *and* police clearance check completed, should have received an invitation to our sign up genius site. If you are interested in volunteering, have completed the necessary paperwork and have not yet emailed your child's teacher, please do so, so we can add you into the volunteer sign up!

  • New Centers were introduced today. Ask your child what center they visited (Centers: small world play, galaxy playdoh, writing center, sorting (shells, fall material), picture cards for letters F and E, number puzzles, chalk night sky collaborative art, blocks)

  • We talked all about day and night!
  • PM Kindergarten went to Phys. Ed. and practiced catching and throwing with bean bags
  • AM Kindergarten practiced some yoga
  • We did some sorting! We sorted pictures of things we see in the day, at night, and things that happen in day OR night!

Today in Kindergarten...

  • We did our letter E art... E is for Earth!
  • We read a story about Earth
  • AM Kindergarten had Phys. Ed. with Mrs. Miller!
  • PM Kinder strengthened their sorting skills and sorted each other in small groups. Some of the PM sorting rules were...
    • By hair type (curly vs. straight)
    • By clothing details (shoes with laces and shoes with velcro)

We are continuing to encourage independence when students are dressing themselves for the end of the morning. Kiddos who got all their gear on and zipped their own coats earned a happy face stamp on their hands today! Keep practicing, friends! We've almost got it!


Thank you to those families who have sent in non-perishables for our Food Drive "We Scare Hunger!". We're collecting food all month long :)

Today in Kindergarten...

  • We learned all about the letter E!
  • AM Kinders did some sky scientist work and went outside to observe the sky. Some of the things we noticed were...
    • the sky was light in some parts and dark in other parts
    • the clouds looked like a blanket
    • there were birds and airplanes flying 
    • there was a little bit of pink
    • maybe there's a storm coming
  • PM Kinders practiced sorting with various materials. We sorted by...
    • Colours
    • Sizes
    • Shapes
    • Details (Number of corners, round and flat, etc.)
  • We read a story called "How To Catch a Star" by Oliver Jeffers



Ask your child...

  • About long and short E sounds. (What starts with the letter E? How many lines make an upper case E?)
  • AM - What did you see in the sky this morning? 
  • PM - What did you sort with this afternoon? Can you sort things around the house by size/colour/shape?

Today PM Kindergarten...

  • participated in FOREST FRIDAY. We met up with our Grade 4 buddies and explored our nearby Aspen Forest with a scavenger hunt. Some of the things the Kinders needed to find: 
  1. A stick as long as their arm
  2. Three different colored leaves
  3. A branch they could reach on their tippy toes
  4. An animal footprint
  5. A human footprint
  • We went to gym today and practiced with the scoops and balls. 
  • We completed our October self-portrait. Our focus was on using appropriate colors and filling the space with said colour. We practiced drawing a house, a tree, and some pumpkins to add detail to our background. 
  • Ask your child what centers they went to today.

  • We practiced our fine motor skills by drawing and colouring in simple shapes

October is "We Scare Hunger" month! Please send in a non-perishable food item so Auburn Bay can exceed last year's collection goal!

Today in Kindergarten...

  • AM Kinders went to gym with Mrs. Miller. They moved in different ways, played and danced with scarves, and worked on following instructions through music and dance. 
  • AM Kinders did an October self portrait and fall scene. They also practiced printing their name. 
  • PM Kinders did some FALL art using a new painting technique (sponge painting). They learned how to draw a tree using 'thinking markers' (sharpies).
  • Ask your child what 'new' center they went to today (New centers were introduced yesterday). 
**We still have some Kinders that are not bringing snowpants to school. Please help your child remember to wear or even to pack their snow pants in their backpack everyday. Thank you so much in advance. We really do not want to have sad and soggy little Kinder friends.
