Monday December 2nd, 2019

Today in Kindergarten...

• AM and PM Kinders did a shape hunt. They were shown pictures of nature (e.g., fish, tree stump, pile of rocks, etc.) and had to identify where they see 2D and 3D shapes. 
• AM  and PM Kinders were introduced to some brand new centers today. Ask your child which center they played at! (Holiday observation station, playdoh cookies, space shuttle center, shape memory game, family gingerbread tracing, writing center, measurement center, number roll, winter wonderland sand play)
• AM Kinders went and practiced for the Christmas concert in the gym with Mrs. Miller.
• PM Kinder finished up their Peace page in their visual journal. They used their 5 senses to describe the things that make them feel peaceful and happy. 

        

Just in case you have not had a chance...we are asking parents/guardians to send in the following to school ASAP

1. a picture of their family home (on paper, does not have to be in color). Kinders will be using their picture to do a shape hunt. If you are unable to send a picture of your home....any picture of a residence will do :)
2. a 4x6 picture of your family. We will begin to look the similarities and differences between families. We will also look at different traditions. We will keep these photos within the classroom and they will be incorporated into a family project that your child will be doing.

Thursday November 28th, 2019

Today in Kindergarten...

• AM Kinders completed their drawings and explanations on what inner peace/happiness is to them using their five senses. 
• PM Kinders learned about the letter M and practiced printing this letter. 
• PM Kinders went to the gym today to practice for their Christmas concert. 
• AM & PM Kinders have been working hard at decorating and making modifications to our space shuttle in the classroom. It will be ready for imaginative play next week! 

We are asking parents/guardians to send in the following to school by Monday December 2nd:

Today in Kindergarten...

• AM Kinders learned about the letter M today
• AM Kinders went to gym and practiced for their Christmas concert
• AM Kinders learned about the 5 sensesa
• AM & PM Kinders learned about what we do in a LOCK DOWN. They know that practicing for these type of situations makes us calmer and helps us to know what to do if there ever was an emergency! They did great :0)
• PM Kinders learned about measurement today. They went on a classroom hunt to find things that were shorter and longer than a popsicle stick. 
• PM Kinders used their 5 senses to show what makes them feel peaceful and happy (What do you smell that makes you feel peaceful/happy? What do you taste that make you feel peaceful/happy?). We will continue to work on this tomorrow. 

Ask your child...

• AM & PM: What do you do if you hear "LOCK DOWN, LOCK DOWN, LOCK DOWN at school? 
• AM & PM: **Ask your child the following question with each of the five senses*** 

1. What do you _ (smell)_ that makes you feel peaceful/happy? 

• AM & PM: Have your child use a spoon and find things that are shorter and longer than the spoon. Have them explain how they know something is shorter or longer than spoon!

Today in AM Kindergarten...

• We learned how to compare the length of two objects using a popsicle stick and items around the classroom!
• We went to gymsic to practice singing, poems and actions for our upcoming Christmas concert
• We read "I am Peace" for mindful Monday

• We learned N is for Numbers! We talked about and recorded what numbers are important to us. Some of us used the day of our birthday, the number of people in their families, etc.
• We talked about the core of the pattern, and used different art materials to create patterns in our sketchbooks

Today in Kindergarten...

• We talked about and experimented with creating two part patterns!
• AM Kindergarten went to Phys. Ed. and we have started practicing some pieces for our Christmas Concert (stay tuned for more details about this in the coming weeks). 
• PM Kindergarten started their rocket design!

Today in Kindergarten...

• AM & PM Kinders learned about why we have Remembrance Day and what poppies stand for. We shared what   PEACE means to us with the class. 
• AM & PM Kinders created some poppy Remembrance Day art. 
• PM Kinders went to gym today. Mrs. Miller taught them how to use our 'traverse wall' safely and how to move (skipping, hopping, jumping with two feet, etc.)
• AM & PM Kinders were read Todd Parr's book --> Peace Is...

        

Wednesday, November 6th

Today in Kindergarten...

• We learned that R is for rocket!
• We learned how rockets take off and land
• We looked at different types of rockets - they can be different sizes!
• We sang a sock about rockets
• We made a plan to build our very own classroom rocket with found materials! 
• We read a non-fiction (real facts!) story about the moon

• What can you tell me about rockets? What will you do with the rocket in your classroom? 
• What is a fact you can tell me about the moon?
• Does it have weather?
• What is it made of?

• We learned a new letter! We practiced the letter R
• We finished our backgrounds on their November self portrait page
• We went to Phys. Ed. and got to use the climbing wall!

• We had FAB time outside! (***Please send your littles dressed to go outside everyday! We go out regularly throughout the year rain or shine and with windchill temps above -15C.***)

Today in Kindergarten...

• We did our November self portraits!
• We met our lovely new student teacher, Ms. Lacuata! She's from the U of C in her final year of her Education degree and will be with us for 8 weeks. We're so excited to get to know her :) 
• AM Kindergarten finished their spooky tree art from last week
• We were introduced to all new centers today!
• We practiced mindfulness - AM Kinders did yoga, and PM Kinders talked about how mindfulness can make us better friends and bucket fillers

Today in Kindergarten...

• We showed what we've learned about sorting. We sorted various items in the classroom into two groups
• We did some spooky Halloween art and learned a new painting technique called a "wash".
• AM Kinders read "Room on the Broom" by Julia Donaldson

• How do you do a wash (with paint)?

Tomorrow students are welcome to come to school in their costumes. We ask that any props such as masks, wands, shields, etc. be left at home.

Today in Kindergarten...

• AM & PM Kinders looked at the below picture and shared what they could SEE, what they already KNEW about objects/places/things in the picture (fact wise), and what they WONDERED about (things they did not know the answer to yet).
• AM Kinders had GYM with Mrs. Miller today. 
• PM Kinders had FAB and their snack outside. 
• PM Kinders practiced a fire drill with the entire school. We talked about how a fire drill is a practice in case a real fire happened, that teachers are here to keep students safe, and that it is a SERIOUS & SILENT drill. The Kinders did excellent!

Ask your child about...

• What did they SEE, what do they already KNOW, and what was one thing they are WONDERING about in the picture below. 
• AM Kinders....ask what they practiced today in gym. 
• PM Kinders...ask why we do fire drills at school. Tell them to describe what they did during our fire drill today. 

***A reminder for both FAB (fresh air breaks) and possible fire drills...please help your littles dress for the weather. We had a couple kiddos that did not bring toques or mitts today and some that did not bring snowpants. Future fire drills will be a surprise and children will be expected to go outside in what they are currently wearing (no coats). Today was our first one and so we had the opportunity to get only our coats on. 

         

Monday, October 28th

Today in Kindergarten...

• We learned about a new letter!
• We talked about and practiced mindfulness for our first Mindful Monday
• We played at all new centers
• We practiced close observing of an interesting picture!

• Can you tell me about your on and off switch? 

It's HALLOWEEN this Thursday!! We know many of your littles are very excited to wear their Halloween costumes to school this Thursday! Students are welcome to wear their costumes for the day. We ask that students come to school in their costumes, and that any props (masks, wands, shields, etc.) are left at home.

As always, we ask that students come to school with a healthy snack. Please save Halloween treats for home ☺.

Friday October 25th, 2019

Today in PM Kindergarten...

• We went on a field trip to the GLENBOW MUSEUM

1. We looked at different face emotions on cards and as a group looked for a painting that matched that emotion. We had to explain our reasons to the group. 
2. We did small group collages for different feelings
3. We talked about how you can feel and see different things in paintings when you look at them. It might not be what your friend, family or teacher experiences! We also imagined we were IN the paintings and described what we things we could hear and smell. 

Thursday October 24th, 2019

Tomorrow is our PM Kinder FIELD TRIP to the GLENBOW MUSEUM. (normal school drop off and pickup hours)

Today in Kindergarten...

• AM Kinders were read the book 'What Pet Should I Get' by Dr. Seuss. They made predictions in their sketchbooks on what would happen at the end of the book. 
• PM Kinders did a guided 'pumpkin' draw today for the letter P. We talked bout warm colors, shading, and lines. 
• AM Kinders learned about STARS today (what they are, how they are born, what colors they can be, and what happens when they die. We also learned what 'constellations' are!)
• AM Kinders went outside for FAB and snack. 
• PM Kinders had gym with Mrs. Miller.
